Recording in the trenches, haul the studio out to record a baby grand piano
One lazy Wednesday afternoon in April, I was thrilled and challenged by a rather unique call - for Sound Weavers to record a baby grand piano concert to be performed at a particular residence. Hmmm, ok. So I have always thought that such a remote recording requirement will come, and I have been surely preparing for - ensuring that our recording studio staff and equipment will be ready for such task when the opportunity, time - and the call - comes knocking. Here's how we did it, recording in the trenches baby!

Fire hits the studio
No, not that “fire” – but that fiery FIREBOTTLE blues band fronted by Joric Maglanque AKA DELTA SLIM – a self confessed soul dredger, err, soul bender – one of the few local ambassadors of blues music (don’t even bring up blues in a conversation unless you are ready to sit for a blues history lesson – LOL).

Snakecharmer Sting Me with the Blues
SNAKECHARMER is one of the bands playing blues-based music featured in the BLUESKRIEG compilation CD project. If the name rings a bell, it's coz they are very active in the live music scene spreading the gospel of the blues.
SNAKECHARMER plays a modern sounding kind of blues music along the lines of The Black Crowes. Snakecharmer is composed of Jason on vocals and harmonica, Mitch on bass guitar, Zan on rhythm and lead guitar, Reuben on rhythm and slide guitar, Mon on drums and Roneil on keyboards.

BluesKrieg! Pinoy blues bands attack the studio
THE BLUES is alive and well in the Philippines - well in the Metro at least - next year BLUES will surely spill and explode throughout the country. BLUES ATTACK = Blueskrieg.
August and September was especially exciting here at Sound Weavers coz of recording sessions for the BluesKrieg project - an ambitious CD compilation featuring Pinoy blues-based music only and played by a current crop of blues-based bands, er.. "artistes" actively playing Metro Manila's club circuit.

Top Drummer Dom Famularo says “RELAX”
Top drummer DOM FAMULARO held a drum clinic at Yupangco’s main office along Buendia Ave Makati City Philippines. DOM is an endorser of Sabian hand hammered cymbals and Vic Firth drum sticks.
I caught the second half of DOM’s presentation/talk/performance. The Yupangco main showroom was cleared to make way for a very large crowd, easily at least 300 people. A drum clinic obviously has a drum kit setup – in this case it was a nice

Recording of a Rondalla Group
One of our interesting and challenging sessions last month was the recording of a 13 member rondalla group - the Drugmakers Rondalla Group. It was a logistical and physical challenge to fit 13 persons with their musical instruments in the relatively limited space of our tracking room - even including using the B room as an isolation room. Fact is the complete rondalla is comprised of 24 members!
Octavina and Banduria are lead instruments in Rondallas
The Drugmakers Rondalla is comprised of amateur/hobbyist musicians - all of them are also employees of the company. We were told that their company president loves music and in fact the company has a chorale group and a brass marchingband, too. What a cool company to work in huh?

Jimmy Luttrell – Guitar King
This weekend we were fortunate to have a very personal encounter with a great musician - JIMMY LUTTRELL is a multi-style, multi discipline guitar player - he's been recording guitars and vocals for a CD of self penned love songs that he will release soon.
Over casual chats, he slowly revealed the "guitar king" that he is, the projects and musicians he has been involved with and OH BOY - it was like a story telling session "HISTORY OF GUITAR and GREAT GUITAR PLAYERS" - straight of the horse's mouth. Among other things, he taught Jimmy Hendrix how to play behind the back guitar - NOW that was blast of a revelation to a music fan like me.

Eye Scream – the band from Cabanatuan City
Eye Scream is a band from Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija - standouts of Muziklaban and GBOB competitions. They have really nice songs and deliver strong and dynamic live performances. I chanced upon them through an acquaintance and now I'm producing their debut recording.
We started pre-production in February, recording live takes of Eye Scream's songs for studies re: arrangements, lyrics, dynamics. We've been tracking drum parts this week - so far so good. 3 songs down and 9 to go. We've also been laying down bass and guitar parts in between drum takes.
