Top drummer DOM FAMULARO held a drum clinic at Yupangco’s main office along Buendia Ave Makati City Philippines. DOM is an endorser of Sabian hand hammered cymbals and Vic Firth drum sticks.

I caught the second half of DOM’s presentation/talk/performance. The Yupangco main showroom was cleared to make way for a very large crowd, easily at least 300 people. A drum clinic obviously has a drum kit setup – in this case it was a nice Pearl drum kit (Master series?) on a riser, lots of Sabian cymbals (two of each kind – 2 hihats, 2 crashes, 2 rides, 2 chinas, 2 splashes). Dom had a clip-on mic to amplify the musician and drummer-focused stories and playing tips he was sharing that night.

DOM’s biggest message that night (at least for me) was that a musician should learn to RELAX. The MORE RELAXED a musician is, the MORE POWER he can command. Let the drumstick bounce! Master “the WHIP”. He also showed a whipping motion that goes in two directions – two hits in one stroke – the double WHIP.

DOM played one more number in its entirety where he displayed his musicianship and dexterity on all pieces of the drum kit from the double kick and hits all over the place. It was amazing watching him play. How relaxed and yet how powerful his performance was.

I am sure a lot of drummers in on that clinic went home with a very valuable lesson to apply to their music. I am confident the drummers there will all be forced to re-examine and re-evaluate their musicality and approach to the drum kit, cymbals and drum sticks as an instrument. I am also certain that a lot of people present there will have a better appreciation of music and life as DOM emphasized that playing music is living a person’s dream. What a nice message. He then commanded us all to “live our dreams”. 😀

At the end of the clinic, the cymbals used by DOM were later sold at 50% discount. As I am a sucker for discount on music equipment and suffering a long time and incurable affliction called GAS – I immediately reserved the 13″ hihat pair – a Sabian AAX Fusion (rippled bottoms) for only P6K – what a steal!
